Taking the view that being proficient in English means being able to communicate effectively with people from various speech communities throughout the world, the presenter will provide a rationale for ELF-aware teaching in a situation where learners share a first language and culture rather than experiencing significant linguacultural differences. In so doing, they aim to justify their application of Kaur’s (2013) recommendations for teaching the effective use of ELF in such a “homogeneous” context. Accordingly, he will describe some of the processes involved in planning, teaching, and evaluating an intensive English course which they conducted for intermediate students at a private university in Tokyo.
