Summary

Using critical pedagogy, through which social relations and contexts not immediately apparent in a text’s structure and features can be manifested (Toh 2016), the presenter contrasted tendencies towards standardization, codification, “correctness”, remediation, and control, with teaching which prioritizes communicative effectiveness as informed by ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) research.
