English language teachers considering the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) have at least three common areas of interest with language policy specialists: 1) understanding language practices, 2) scrutinizing language ideology, and 3) evaluating interventions and plans which may modify or influence language practice. Accordingly, the presenter will examine ELF-aware pedagogy, firstly by highlighting aspects of ELF which may help in understanding ELF use and associated pedagogical implications, secondly by probing ideological influences on curricular change, and thirdly by describing classroom activities intended to facilitate ELF awareness. The aim is to encourage critical reflection on 1) how certain world views may be influential but hidden in classroom contexts, and 2) whether curricular change is required in response to ELF.
