Quincy is an IB practitioner with a teaching background in General Sciences, Physics, Mathematics and Theory of Knowledge. He also has experience leading change at one of the very first Article 1 schools to be authorized in Japan to offer the IB (the second school to be exact). He was part of a team that led the school towards authorization for both the MYP and DP. Currently, he is involved in the ongoing development of the IB certificate of teaching and learning program as an Instructor at the Tamagawa University Graduate School of Education. He continues to be active in supporting the promotion of the IB in Japan, as a DP Physics Principal Examiner, DP School Consultant, DP school visiting team leader, IBEN Trainer, IB Field Representative, IB Lead Educator, IB learning hub facilitator, IB bilingual workshop leader and IB online workshop facilitator.

Research project
School leadership in IB authorized schools in Japan My research interest lies in exploring school leadership in International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools in Japan, focusing on how traditional Japanese cultural values intersect with leadership styles and decision-making processes in these globally minded educational environments. I am particularly intrigued by how leaders in these schools navigate the tension between Japan’s deeply rooted emphasis on discipline, conformity, and academic achievement and the IB’s progressive, inquiry-based approach that prioritizes student agency, inclusivity, and global engagement. By employing methodologies such as classic grounded theory, I aim to uncover the unique challenges and strategies these leaders employ to foster school cultures that align with the IB mission while respecting and integrating local cultural contexts. This research has broader implications for understanding how global education frameworks can harmonize with local traditions, contributing to more effective and culturally responsive school leadership.
PSP2020 Language and Learning Pilot Project (Collaborative Research Project with the International Baccalaureate) Recognizing the needs in the IB community in Japan from working with and listening to many stakeholders, this research project aims to understand how the new IB Standards and Practices (PSP2020) and the process of Programme Evaluation are interpreted by schools. The IB aims to use the findings gathered from this research to improve support to Article 1 schools in terms of programme development planning as part of continued reflection to support the evaluation process, particularly in the area of 'language learning development' to inform decision making in schools and establish effective and meaningful support strategies.
Investigation of key factors that contribute to effective facilitation of ATLs in the classroom: A grounded theory approach Individual An important component within all of the 4 curriculum models offered by the IB is the ATL (approaches to learning) skills framework. It is believed that transparency and effective implementation of these ATL skill sets into the school’s IB curriculum will assist students in ‘learning how to learn’ - to develop skills in effectively managing and evaluating the process of their own learning. While the ATL and its purpose and uses are well documented in the IB literature, in practice however, it is still quite difficult to see how the ATLs explicitly assists students in 'learning how to learn' in the classroom and what the effective approaches are in integrating it into the learning experiences so that it is relevant and meaningful for all learners. This research will attempt to explore and unravel some underlying factors and circumstances that play a key role in promoting the effective integration and implementation of the ATLs in IB schools. The proposed outcome of the research will be an emergent integrating theory that will aim to provide satisfactory explanation to educators regarding ATLs and its effective facilitation.
Investigating curriculum design and school organization structures in Japan, and how to align it with pedagogical principles and practices of the IB This research project aims to explore how the curriculum design and school organizational structures in Japan can be aligned with the pedagogical principles and practices of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The study focuses on examining the traditional Japanese education system, characterized by a strong emphasis on standardized national curricula, rigid hierarchies, and a focus on academic achievement, and investigating how these structures intersect with the IB's learner-centered, inquiry-based approach.
