Summary

Remarks

Widespread ownership and use of smartphones and other mobile devices are influencing a shift in classroom paradigms. Furthermore, the increasing availability of digitized text and tools which allow teachers to modify and distribute reading texts suggests that the reading experience for language learners is one domain susceptible to change and new opportunities. Extensive reading (ER) through mobile devices is only an emerging area of study in the English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) classroom. This presentation will report on the a pilot test of X-ReadingĀ® (<www.xreading.com>), a new learning management system (LMS) devoted specifically to extensive reading. Participants in this study have access to a virtual library of graded readers (GR) and are explicitly asked to read on their mobile devices. This presentation will: describe the implementation of X-ReadingĀ® in a university ELF program in Tokyo, Japan.
