This entry on Buddhist pilgrimage introduces this very complex and extensive category for this encyclopedia which focuses on sex and gender. I chose to give a short general introduction, followed by an actual example of one such pilgrimage, and for that I drew from my own research on teh Fuji cult in Edo period Japan. In this popular pilgrimage, which blurs the boundaries of Buddhism and other religions and beliefs, the pilgrims had the opportunity to reconsider the social roles of gender, one of the main teaching of this popular cult being the nedd to consider man and women equally important.
