伝統的な原価計算システムのなかでも先進的と考えられるLongman=Shiff［1955］の機能別原価計算とABCの計算構造を比較し、ABCの革新性について考察した。両者の計算構造は類似しているが、管理会計の観点からすれば、ABCには原価管理に対しても有用な概念を潜在的に具備していた点が重要である。
