This study examined the potential of ecotourism (ET) as a strategy for sustainable development by conceptualizing community tourism in Tanzania as a form of community-based ecotourism characterized by local participation.
While ET is widely regarded as an effective development approach, its impacts can be both positive and negative depending on local conditions and circumstances. In addition, social capital is often utilized as an important resource for community development; however, it may also generate various forms of inequality within local communities.
The findings suggest that, if ET is to be employed as a development strategy in the future, it is essential to implement measures to reduce inequalities, ensure equitable opportunities for participation, and strengthen local governance within communities.
