Summary

This study focuses on Djibouti as one example that illustrates the diversity of tourism resources in Africa and the impact of late development.
The objectives of this study were twofold.
(i) To understand the current tourism resources in Djibouti and examine the potential for tourism development.
(ii) To examine the potential and challenges as a latecomer to tourism development
According to World Bank projections, Djibouti could attract up to 500,000 tourists by 2030. Although this target is very ambitious, there is already demand for tourism from marine resources, especially the Red Sea, and there is also potential for tourism demand from the already mentioned heritage sites in the future. The feasibility of this projected value will improve if development plans are formulated and implemented with a focus on receiving domestic and international tourists and if the government's goal of DX-centered development progresses and conditions are put in place to facilitate the entry of private operators.
