As teacher researchers in an ELF language program, we are taking steps toward developing a more ELF-oriented curriculum which incorporates Wen’s recommendations by engaging ourselves and our students in intercultural relationships through grassroots service-learning. Service-learning, a form of experiential education, provides students with opportunities to learn, develop, and reflect through participation in organized service which takes place in and supports local communities. Our journey into service learning began by establishing and nurturing ties with NGO English schools in Cambodia and having our students participate in the project by creating lesson material for learners in Cambodia. Participants consisted of 53 first and second-year intermediate level university students from three departments. They were asked to create videos describing aspects of Japanese traditional toys, accommodating their language to the Cambodian audience. In the spring of 2016, the presenters visited three NGO English schools in Siem Reap learning about the English language and educational needs in Cambodia from the NGO directors.
