Summary

Unlike the view, based on English as a foreign language concepts, that communication strategies (CSs) become less important as a learner becomes more native-like (Savignon, 1997), the ad-hoc nature of ELF interactions makes it “essential that teachers incorporate learning activities that enhance learners’ use of pragmatic strategies to maximize the effectiveness of their communication in ELF” (Kaur, 2014, p.161). In light of this, the presenter will provide a structured approach, as part of a larger framework, designed to develop learners’ strategic competence. The framework creates opportunities for students to practice CSs on multiple levels ranging from highly structured to meaningful ELF-type practice that can be adapted to all levels. Student feedback which reflects the positive and challenging aspects of the framework will be discussed as well as future directions.
