Verbal presentations (general)
King’s College London, UK
In this talk, the author will present three approaches he employs in the classroom to create opportunities for learners to develop communication skills that are compatible with recommendations made by ELF researchers. Specifically, the author will provide a framework, designed to simulate ELF-type interactions and raise ELF awareness in the homogeneous classroom. which comprises both methods and materials he has developed for 1) the explicit teaching of communication strategies (CSs), 2) pro-active listening (PAL) comprehension that utilizes listening texts of non-native speakers to create opportunities for learners to put their CS training into practice, and 3) the use of role plays to assess learners’ ability to co-construct meaning. The author will also share his reflections on the above methods and materials based on his own classroom observations and feedback from students. He will end by discussing possible directions forward based on lessons learned along the way.
