Summary

This paper investigates the use of communication strategies in online ELF interactions between Japanese university students and international co-interactants by using a conversation analytic approach. Post-task interviews were also conducted to gain the participants’ view on their interactions. The paper provides insights into Japanese lower-proficiency university students' communicative capability and their use of communication strategies in non-academic ELF settings with other non-native speakers during first-time encounters. The paper also offers suggestions for how teachers can better prepare students for such future encounters in ELF-informed pedagogy.
