Within the context of higher education, international education has tradi-
tionally been driven by programs and activities that encourage students to study
abroad and learn foreign languages and cultures. This has been accomplished by
giving opportunities to interact with foreign students and learn about cross-cultural
differences. These activities and programs are provided by higher educational insti-
tutions. However, we recognized that the move to online learning and the prolifera-
tion of online streaming services requires that we rethink the traditional view of
globalization in higher education. This rethinking includes incorporating exposure
to international content, ideas, and personalities online through globalized content
pushed by oftentimes US-based online platforms and services. These are indepen-
dent factors in young people’s global mobility aspirations and orientation and pres-
ent opportunities and challenges to those working in international higher education.
The chapter discusses increased foreign media consumption and global mobility
aspirations among Japanese college students.
