Conforming to native speaker norms?: An initial investigation of Japanese learners’ communicative capability in ELF interactions

We presented our findings from a pilot-study which has examined Japanese university learners’ communicative capabilities by describing their use of communication strategies (CSs) in spoken communication during English as a lingua franca (ELF) interactions with English users from outer and expanding circle countries. These interactions were audio and video recorded, and analyzed with the policy of conversation analysis. The aim of this study was to: (1) describe how Japanese learners co-construct and negotiate meaning in spoken ELF interactions; (2) identify the type and frequency of CSs Japanese learners use in order to pre-empt or repair problems with hearing or understanding in spoken ELF interactions; and (3) determine what interactional resources the participants use effectively to achieve various social actions.
