This presentation demonstrated that mission, value, and vision statements can be used to elicit learners' purpose for learning, their personal beliefs, and learning goals. It also presented real life classroom examples which suggested that such statements, when co-created, can enhance student motivation and raise their level of engagement. At the same time, they help to reduce the need for top-down rules and the traditional role of teachers as ‘enforcers’ of such rules.
