概要

The current study attempts to better understand the
communicative needs of Japanese university students and to assist the teachers in our ELF program with
practical suggestions to help address those needs.  The aim of this research is to gain a greater understanding of our lower-proficiency
learners’ communicative strengths and potential challenges they may encounter as users of English as a
lingua franca in nonacademic settings. Informed by the findings through conversation analysis of
intercultural exchanges, the presenters will introduce the ELF-oriented modules they have developed to
enhance students’ ability to employ communicative/pragmatic strategies more effectively and to raise
intercultural awareness. Outcomes of this investigation indicate that classroom instruction on
communication strategies may be beneficial in developing learners’ communicative capability when
negotiating meaning and resolving communication difficulties.
