‘Borderless’ Online ELF Spoken Interactions: Participants’ Views and Perspectives Through ‘Accommodation’ Strategies

The purpose of this study was to investigate ELF participants’ linguistic and cultural accommodations in the process of recognizing different cultures and varieties of English as a lingua franca (ELF) during online video conferencing-based interactions. Specifically, this research aimed to: (1) describe how Japanese learners co-construct and negotiate meaning using communication strategies in spoken ELF interactions; (2) determine what interactional resources the participants use effectively to achieve various social actions; and (3) determine whether participants experienced any transcultural exchange of information or values. This study demonstrated that ELF speakers’ perceptions are negotiated and accommodated not only linguistically but also transculturally as a real-world border-crossing experience.
