This paper highlights a potential contradiction in the concepts of ‘public morality’ and ‘freedom and responsibility’—as set out in the curriculum guidelines for the ‘Special Subject: Moral Education’—namely, that situations may arise where certain behaviours, viewed from the perspective of information ethics education, cannot necessarily be described as desirable. Furthermore, this paper describes a prototype reading material designed for use in the ‘Special Subject: Ethics’ in lower secondary schools or in the Information Studies subject in upper secondary schools, and reports on the evaluation of this material by students enrolled in teacher training programmes.
