Analytic pitfalls found in "Endearingly lovely things" in Makura no soshi : Reconsideration of strategic directional approach to analysis is needed to avoid pitfalls in interpretation of classic chapters.

This article will discuss the common approach to analyze the theme and the elements found within a classic chapter, such as “Endearingly lovely things,”and to explore the function of each element to the whole work using the linguistic method of accumulation. Further discussion challenges the current standard analytical approach adopted by the secondary level Japanese classical literature education. Author suggests a comprehensive approach of introducing the classic literature to high school classrooms by incorporating not only the lateral examination of the elements, but also an in-depth/vertical analysis of each element in historic or situational perspectives. Without both the vertical and lateral examination, one would be left with only an incomplete and potentially shallow interpretation of the work.
