A consideration regarding the literary ‘function’ of the dialogue from the chapter, “After the Late Regent’s Death.” in Makura no soshi.

This paper discusses the application of the known function which is significant to the “romantic poetry exchange,” to the “conversational dialogue” found in Makura no soshi. Application of this previously known concept or function will explore the existing dialogue and the foundational context, thus bringing further depth to the understanding of the literary expressions. Reaching into the potential meaning behind the actual expressions through this application, as well as the exploration using the intertexual associations with other Waka pieces would bring the reading of Makura no soshi to a much deeper, more complex and richer level of experience.
