"The Northeast Corner of Seiryo Palace", a chapter in The Pillow Book [Makura no Soshi] has been traditionally analyzed based on its literary relationship with Kokin Wakashū. The presented paper discusses this chapter with the perspective of intertextuality with other waka from the same era such as the Tale of Ise. For example, the opening of the chapter that begins with the depiction of a frightening picture and later ends with someone’s smile is suggestive of the underlining connections to 'U-shi-to-ra' Waka. Further, the analysis of the remainder of the chapter gives cause to consider the 101st episode in The Tales of Ise.
Taking an approach to the intertextually-focused chapter analyses, in other words, reviewing The Pillow Book in light of The Tales of Ise led the research team to redefine the distinctly different process in which waka is developed and presented in each episode in The Pillow Book. The Pillow Book episodes present waka after the presentation of additional characters or descriptions of the setting, whereas, the proses in the Tales of Ise take a direct path to the final formation and presentation of waka.
