The Center for English as a Lingua Franca (CELF) at Tamagawa University is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of the ELF program and introducing a revised program this April. This 10-year journey has, of course, not been without challenges, partly because ELF is not a language variety but a cultural and linguistic phenomenon and partly because as a university program it is necessary to respond to student needs, institutional requirements, and local as well as global concerns. The presenters will outline some issues associated with implementing the program and “teaching ELF”, including the use of TOEIC, extensive reading, teaching materials and activities, and professional development. The ELF program may be indistinguishable from other university English language programs at first glance. However, small but steady innovative steps have been taken to develop ELF-oriented practices. We would like to share our experiences during this talk.
