Summary

Amid trends towards internationalization in higher education, English is increasingly
being used in university settings (Galloway & Rose, 2015). EMI is "The use of the
English language to teach academic subjects in (contexts) where the first language
(L1) of the majority of the population is not English", according to Dearden (2014,
p. 4). Which issues should lecturers consider before using English to teach
academic subjects? What are the implications of using ELF for EMI at Tamagawa
University? The presenter will outline historical, cultural, ideological, and political
considerations impacting answers to these questions, while endeavoring to
facilitate participants’ understanding of ELF-aware pedagogy and effective teaching
practices in EMI. Participants will have opportunities to discuss their thoughts
about appropriate EMI teaching practices. The presenter contends that even in
monolingual settings, and especially in EMI settings, students benefit from an
emphasis on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
