Summary

Teacher Professional Learning Collaborative Crafting Approaches to Learning (ATL) Other This study explores how teachers in International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate and authorized schools in Japan implement the Approaches to Learning (ATL) framework as a schoolwide initiative. Using a classic grounded theory approach across ten Japanese Article 1 schools, the research generated an emergent model—collaborative crafting—describing teacher professional learning as a social process of internalizing, tinkering, and channeling. Findings show that sustained ATL implementation is fostered not through top-down mandates, but through structures that support classroom-based experimentation and collaborative sharing among teachers.
