This study aimed to examine the following two points about tourist literacy from the perspective of tourist behaviour theory, based on previous research: 1. to identify what literacy is in the context of travel and 2. to identify what competencies are gained through travel. Literacy for travel can be broadly categorised into general travel literacy, geographic literacy, and cultural competence. These three types of travel literacy lead to the following outcomes: increased satisfaction, reduced perceived risk, less decision deferral and avoidance, memorable experiences, and positive cultural behaviour. The competencies gained through travel can be summarised as adaptation to new environments and cultures, open-mindedness, understanding of others, communication with others, self-confidence and independence, management of unpleasant feelings such as stress and pressure, tolerance, and money management. Factors that have been identified as influencing the level and type of competence gained through travel are motivation, level of involvement, number of trips, length of stay, and demographics.
