The presenter reported on a Kakenhi project investigating beginning to pre-intermediate
Japanese English learners’ strategic capabilities during ELF interactions via Zoom. Results of
post-interviews with the Japanese participants and their foreign interlocutors were discussed
and implications for ELF-aware pedagogy examined, including the significance of cultural affinity.
