A Psychological Analysis of UNESCO’s Global Citizenship Education ― Towards the Formation of Integrated Multiple Identities
![]() |
The aim of the present study is to prove that the formation of a global citizenship identity as a kind of integrated multiple identities constitutes a crucial cornerstone for effective development of the Global Citizenship Education (GCED) proclaimed by UNESCO. This global citizenship identity implies the viewpoint from which the whole human community shall be recognized as one’s own “in-group.” The developmental conditions for the fundamental characteristics of global citizenship, including the acceptance of plurality, the sense of ownership and the tolerance for diversity are analyzed in the framework of psycho-educational tasks. The possibility of elaborating effective GCED programmes at UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) is discussed in connection to ESD.
